Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the 4.5-year bleaching efficacy and longevity of in-office dental bleaching.
  • To determine the effect of ibuprofen/arginine desensitization on bleaching outcomes and patient sensitivity.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized clinical trial involving 62 patients with darker canines.
  • In-office bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide, with or without desensitizing gel.
  • Color change assessment using Vita Classical, Vita Bleachedguide, and spectrophotometry at baseline, 1 month, and 4.5 years.
