Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

348
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

153
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Regression Toward the Mean01:52

Regression Toward the Mean

6.5K
Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when...

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS01:11

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS

14.4K
Genome-wide association studies or GWAS are used to identify whether common SNPs are associated with certain diseases. Suppose specific SNPs are more frequently observed in individuals with a particular disease than those without the disease. In that case, those SNPs are said to be associated with the disease. Chi-square analysis is performed to check the probability of the allele likely to be associated with the disease.
GWAS does not require the identification of the target gene involved in...

Case Studies

12.1K
There are many research methods available to psychologists in their efforts to understand, describe, and explain behavior and the cognitive and biological processes that underlie it.

Nondisjunction01:21

Nondisjunction

4.1K
Nondisjunction is the failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate correctly and move to the opposite poles of the cells. This produces daughter cells with abnormal chromosome numbers.  Nondisjunction is common during anaphase I or anaphase II of meiosis.  Mutations in synaptonemal complex proteins that attach homologous chromosomes increase the chances of nondisjunction in anaphase I of meiosis I. In contrast, mutations in topoisomerases and condensins that hold...

Summary

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) use was not significantly different in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to typically developing children. ART did not correlate with ASD gender or severity, reassuring concerns about a link.

Area of Science:

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Reproductive Medicine

Background:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and assisted reproductive technology (ART) rates have risen concurrently.
  • Concerns exist regarding a potential association between ART and ASD development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between ART and ASD using a case-control study.
  • To determine if ART influences ASD gender distribution or severity.

Main Methods:

  • Case-control study comparing 319 children with ASD to 319 age-matched typically developing children.
  • Analysis adjusted for gender, ART type, and ASD severity.
  • Statistical analysis included odds ratios and confidence intervals.

Main Results:

  • ART use rates were similar between ASD (8.5%) and typically developing (9.4%) groups.
  • No significant association found between ART and ASD diagnosis (aOR = 0.537, 95% CI 0.110-3.383).
  • Hormonal treatment and in vitro fertilization (IVF) also showed no significant association with ASD.

Conclusions:

  • ART is not more common in children with ASD compared to controls.
  • ART does not correlate with gender or severity of ASD.
  • Findings reassure against a significant association between ART and ASD.
