    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Otorhinolaryngology

    Context:

    • Analysis of 32 patients with multiple primary malignant tumors treated between 1965 and 1984.
    • Review of 1149 malignant head and neck tumors, with 32 cases (2.79%) identified as multiple primary malignant tumors.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the incidence and characteristics of multiple primary malignant tumors in head and neck cancer patients.
    • To identify common tumor types and associations in cases of multiple malignancies.

    Summary:

    • The study included 32 patients with multiple primary malignant tumors, with one case each of quadruple and triple malignancies, and the rest double malignancies.
    • The average age was 67.5 years for males and 52.7 for females (male:female ratio 4.3:1).
    • The average interval between the first and second tumor was 35 months, with 56.7% being synchronous. Laryngeal cancers were the most frequent double-primary lesions, and head and neck cancers were commonly associated with stomach cancers.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the occurrence of multiple primary malignant tumors in head and neck oncology.
    • Provides insights into patient demographics, tumor types, and synchronous vs. metachronous presentation.
    • Identifies specific cancer associations, such as laryngeal and stomach cancers, relevant for clinical surveillance and research.
