Introduction:
Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength. Muscle mass loss has been well-documented in the elderly; however, sarcopenia in younger adults is less studied. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of sarcopenia in a population under 65 years of age and its characteristics.
Materials And Methods:
This was an observational, retrospective, and descriptive study. Patients of both sexes who were treated between April 2022 and August 2022 at the Endocrinology, Metabolism, Nutrition, and Diabetes Service were included. Body composition was recorded using bio-impedance, muscle strength (dynamometer), and physical activity.
Results:
A total of 69 patients (53 women and 16 men) between 19 and 63 years of age were included. The prevalence of women with low muscle strength was 20.7% (n: 11) and 25% (n: 4) in men. The mean muscle mass index (kg) / height (m2) in women was 9.46 ± 1.78, and in men, it was 11.62 ± 1.55. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 1.9% in women and 1.3% in men.
Discussion:
The overall prevalence of sarcopenia was 8.6%, being higher in men than in women. The results obtained are consistent with those reported in the literature regarding the prevalence and characteristics of the population.
