Development of an autogenous vaccine against encephalomyocarditis in pigs

Abstract:
Encephalomyocarditis (EMC) is a rodent-borne disease that affects a variety of animal species, including humans, with pigs being particularly susceptible. It has been circulating for several years and has become endemic in certain areas of the world. While a commercial vaccine is available in the United States, no such vaccines are on offer in Europe, where EMC poses a significant risk. In this study, an autogenous vaccine for pigs was developed in response to a high mortality outbreak that occurred in an endemic area for EMCV in Italy. An inactivated vaccine formulated with an aluminium hydroxide adjuvant was administered in two doses to ensure optimal immunogenicity. The vaccine proved to be safe and effective both in the laboratory and under field conditions.
