Workplace violence (WPV) in healthcare remains a significant issue. A quality improvement project implementing a WPV bundle showed no statistically significant improvements in staff utilization of resources, confidence, knowledge, or support.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Management
- Occupational Safety
- Nursing Practice
Background:
- Workplace violence (WPV) in healthcare negatively impacts staff well-being and institutional stability.
- Increasing WPV incidents contribute to staff attrition and exacerbate healthcare workforce shortages.
- Underreporting of WPV is common due to cultural acceptance, lack of resource awareness, and inadequate support.
Purpose of the Study:
- To implement a WPV intervention bundle in a general surgery unit.
- To evaluate the impact of the bundle on staff utilization of WPV resources.
- To assess changes in staff confidence, knowledge, and perceived support following WPV events.
Main Methods:
- A hybrid education bundle, the Violet Education Bundle, was implemented.
- The bundle included training on de-escalation, incident reporting, and psychological support resources.
- A single-group, pre- and post-test design with a paired t-test was used for evaluation.
Main Results:
- Only 23.2% of staff completed both pre- and post-surveys.
- No statistically significant increases were observed in resource utilization, confidence, knowledge, or perceived support from pre- to post-implementation.
- Limited survey completion may have influenced the statistical significance of the findings.
Conclusions:
- Nurses anecdotally reported valuing the consolidated WPV resources.
- The 60-day follow-up period may have been insufficient to detect significant changes.
- Further research with longer follow-up is needed to assess sustained effectiveness of WPV interventions.
