Abstract:
Bis(phenylsulfonyl)methane (BPSM) is used as a functional electrolyte additive to assist in the construction of stable electrode/electrolyte interfacial films to improve the performance of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2/graphite batteries at room and low temperatures and compared to the non-BPSM-containing batteries, rate and cycling performance of BPSM-containing batteries can also be enhanced. After 1200 cycles at 25 °C, the capacity retention of the battery with BPSM increases from 8.68% to 83.07%. After 130 cycles at -10 °C, the capacity retention of the battery with BPSM increases from 21.01% to 98.97%. The spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrate that BPSM is preferentially oxidized and reduced on the cathode and anode, respectively, to construct stable and high-conductivity electrode-electrolyte interphase. The enhanced performance reveals that BPSM is an effective film-forming additive with promising applications in nickel-rich lithium-ion batteries.
