Understanding the implementation of the geriatric center in King Abdulaziz general hospital

As the global population ages, adequate healthcare and social services for older adults become increasingly vital. Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), which evaluates medical, psychosocial, functional, and environmental aspects, offers a multidisciplinary approach to address the diverse needs of older individuals. This study explores CGA implementation and its impact on elderly healthcare outcomes, focusing on stages from candidate selection to plan execution.

Qualitative methods guided by grounded theory were employed. Primary care providers and elderly from a Saudi Arabian geriatric clinic were purposively sampled. Interviews were conducted online with providers and in person with older adults from December 2022 to February 2023. NVivo facilitated thematic analysis. Data analysis was collaborative, iteratively identifying emergent themes.

The study identified key factors influencing CGA implementation. Provider attitudes, patient perceptions, and healthcare system intricacies played pivotal roles. Challenges in translating CGA into primary care practice were highlighted, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach.

This research offers insights into the dynamics of CGA implementation in a novel healthcare setting. Examining primary care providers' and older individuals' perspectives identifies factors that facilitate or hinder CGA integration. These findings inform policymakers and providers seeking to enhance elderly care in similar contexts.
