Firearm-related injuries and deaths are growing epidemics with significant health-related problems in the United States. Firearm-related injuries continue to contribute to significant mortality and morbidity in the United States. A single ballistic injury can result in damage in vasculature, nerves, tendons, and/or bone and can present as a challenging reconstructive problem for upper extremity surgeons. Understanding the mechanism of injury and resulting wound pattern is essential in caring for these patients. Surgeons and caretakers must educate patients on responsible firearm use and limit further injuries without infringing on the responsible rights of firearm ownership.
