    Summary

    F-wave analysis reveals increased latency in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and neurogenic atrophy (NA) patients. A dominant F-wave waveform, more frequent in ALS and NA, may indicate reduced motoneuron function.

    Background:

    • F-waves are electrophysiological responses used to assess nerve conduction.
    • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and neurogenic atrophy (NA) are conditions affecting motor neurons.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate F-wave characteristics in patients with ALS and NA compared to healthy individuals.
    • To determine if F-wave latency and waveform patterns can serve as indicators of motor neuron disease.

    Main Methods:

    • F-waves were recorded from the peroneal nerves of 17 normal subjects, 11 ALS patients, and 13 NA patients.
    • Analysis focused on F-wave latency, number of repeated responses, and dominant waveform occurrence.

    Main Results:

    • Both ALS and NA patients exhibited increased F-wave latency compared to normal subjects.
    • The incidence of a dominant F-wave waveform was significantly higher in ALS and NA patients.
    • While repeated responses were higher in NA patients, they were not significantly different in ALS patients compared to controls.

    • Increased F-wave latency and a dominant waveform are significant indicators of abnormality in ALS and NA.
