Abstract:
Most health systems in low and middle-income countries face numerous challenges including resource constraints, infrastructure limitations, and ineffective service delivery. This paper discusses the design of a FHIR-based mobile application to improve appointment management in LMICs. The application aims to ease appointment scheduling, reduce patient wait times, and improve resource utilization among healthcare providers. Using the open-standard FHIR protocol, the system seamlessly interoperates with existing health systems, providing scalability and integration with patient records. Core functionalities include appointment scheduling, telemedicine integration, notifications, and offline capabilities that support low-connectivity regions. This application addresses local challenges regarding digital literacy, data privacy, and infrastructure limitations to provide an efficient and cost-effective healthcare management solution in LMICs.
