    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in diagnosing portal hypertension.
    • To compare MR imaging findings with visceral angiography in patients with and without portal hypertension.
    • To assess the ability of MR imaging to detect venous occlusions and collateral circulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirteen patients with portal hypertension underwent MR imaging (spin-echo sequences) and visceral angiography.
    • A control group of 20 patients without portal hypertension was also examined.
    • MR images and angiograms were analyzed for signs of portal vein occlusion, patency, and collateral formation.

    • MR imaging identified portal vein occlusion in 2 of 3 cases and superior mesenteric vein occlusion in 4 of 5 cases.

    • MR imaging is a valuable tool for diagnosing portal hypertension and assessing venous status.
    • The technique aids in differentiating causes of portal hypertension by characterizing collateral pathways.
