Long-term Depression01:03

Long-term Depression

2.6K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.5K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

173
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Obedience01:08

Obedience

33.1K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

254
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

225
Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Summary

Physician job satisfaction significantly impacts suicidal ideation over two decades. High emotional exhaustion correlates with suicidal behavior, though work issues are rarely cited as the primary cause.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Psychiatry
  • Medical Workforce Research

Background:

  • Investigates the longitudinal relationship between physician job satisfaction and suicidal ideation.
  • Examines job satisfaction among physicians reporting suicidal planning and attempts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the long-term association between doctors' job satisfaction and suicidal ideation.
  • To describe the job satisfaction levels of doctors with a history of suicidal planning or attempts.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Warr's Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) from 2002-2021.
  • Employed Paykel's questionnaire for suicidal ideation in 2021.
  • Included 1470 doctors in 2021, applying multivariate logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • Physicians with suicidal ideation (16%) reported lower JSS and higher emotional exhaustion.
  • Lower JSS, increased emotional exhaustion, and reduced personal accomplishment predicted suicidal ideation.
  • Being in a relationship was identified as a protective factor against suicidal ideation.

Conclusions:

  • Reduced job satisfaction over 20 years preceded suicidal ideation reports in doctors.
  • Physicians with suicidal behavior exhibited high emotional exhaustion, but rarely cited work problems for attempts.
