    Summary

Nerve fibers, including adrenergic types, were found in some nasal polyps. Degenerated nerve fibers were also observed, suggesting potential roles in polyp development and function.

    Area of Science:

    • Nasal pathophysiology
    • Neuroscience
    • Electron microscopy

    Background:

    • Nasal polyps are inflammatory growths in the nasal cavity.
    • The role of nerve fibers in nasal polyp development is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and type of nerve fibers within nasal polyps using transmission electron microscopy.

    Main Methods:

    • Nasal polyp tissues from 12 patients were analyzed.
    • Transmission electron microscopy was employed to identify and characterize nerve fibers.

    Main Results:

    • Nerve fibers were identified in 4 out of 12 nasal polyps.
    • Both myelinated and nonmyelinated nerve fibers were observed.
    • Nonmyelinated nerve endings were adrenergic and located near arterial smooth muscle cells; no cholinergic fibers were found.
    • Some nerves showed degeneration, particularly in the polyp pedicle.

    Conclusions:

    • Adrenergic nerve fibers are present in some nasal polyps.
    • Nerve fiber degeneration may play a role in the pathology of nasal polyps.
