Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

153
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Mindfulness interventions show promise for autistic adults' mental health.
  • Existing research predominantly focuses on in-person delivery models.
  • There is a need to explore accessible, virtual formats for autistic populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a 6-week autistic-informed group-based virtual mindfulness intervention.
  • To compare outcomes against a waitlist control group.
  • To assess the maintenance of effects at follow-up.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial with 63 autistic adults across Canada.
  • Intervention group received a 6-week virtual mindfulness program.
  • Waitlist control group received no intervention initially; outcomes assessed at multiple time points.

Main Results:

  • The virtual mindfulness group reported significant improvements in distress, stress, self-compassion, mindfulness, and mental wellbeing.
  • These improvements were maintained at 8-week follow-up.
  • No significant changes were observed in autistic community connectedness or interoceptive sensitivity in either group.

Conclusions:

  • Virtual delivery of autistic-informed mindfulness programs is effective for improving mental health outcomes.
  • Online group-based mindfulness offers a viable alternative to in-person interventions.
  • Further research should investigate optimal delivery formats (synchronous vs. asynchronous, group vs. individual) and dosage.
