Improving Soft Tissue Integration of Acrylic Resin by Compositing with Bioactive Glass

Abstract:
With the extensive application of implants in tissue and organ repair, their integration with surrounding tissues is attracting increasing attention. Soft tissue is characterized by high dynamic strain and a complex immune microenvironment, imposing stringent requirements on the mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and surface characteristics of implanted materials. Therefore, compared to the success in implant/hard tissue integration, implant/soft tissue integration remains challenging, and failure to form a stable implant/soft tissue interface is often observed, leading to inflammation, tissue rejection, or even implant failure. To address this issue, we developed acrylic resin/bioactive glass composites. It was found that compositing bioactive glass significantly improved the soft tissue integration of the acrylic resin and effectively reduced its inflammatory response. A demonstration of the obtained composite in subgingival dentin defect restoration showed improved gingival covering and biological seal, highlighting its potential applications in cases where soft tissue integration is essential.
