Abstract:
Hemorrhages occur frequently in both extreme situations and daily life, necessitating effective hemostatic materials for severe and minor wounds. While collagen is widely used for its biocompatibility and absorbability, its limited thermal stability and efficacy restrict its performance. To address this, we enhanced collagen by modifying it with oxidized Sanguisorba officinalis extract (OSo), creating OSo-Col (OC) composites. The optimized OC-1.3 composite demonstrated exceptional clotting ability, achieving a blood clotting index of 5.44 ± 0.34% and a clotting time of 5.56 ± 0.82 s in lab tests. In rat models, OC-1.3 reduced liver bleeding time to 30.99 ± 2.47 s and tail amputation bleeding to 18.05 ± 0.63 s, while cutting blood loss to 127.03 ± 42.28 mg─outperforming commercial gauze. These results highlight OC-1.3's potential as a rapid, lightweight solution for both clinical and everyday wound care.
