Background:

  • Mobility, the capacity for free movement, naturally declines with age.
  • Extreme weather and climate events (EWCEs) increasingly threaten mobility resilience, particularly for older adults (≥65 years).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between neighborhood age demographics and mobility resilience following an extreme weather and climate event (EWCE).

Main Methods:

  • A case series study analyzed 2022 demographic data and social infrastructure point-of-interest visitations before and after Hurricane Ian in Florida.
  • Mobility resilience was characterized using a resilience triangle framework, measuring recovery duration, recovery ratio, impact ratio, and cumulative mobility losses.

Main Results:

  • Neighborhoods in the oldest age quartile exhibited prolonged mobility recovery (1.137 days longer), lower recovery ratios (-2.1%), higher impact ratios (1.2%), and greater cumulative mobility losses (17.0 percentage-days) post-hurricane.
  • These age-related associations were significantly reduced when accounting for hurricane wind exposure intensity.

Conclusions:

  • Older-aged neighborhoods demonstrated diminished mobility resilience in the wake of Hurricane Ian.
  • Findings suggest the need for neighborhood-specific mobility interventions to enhance climate resilience among older populations.
