Abstract:
Biofouling remains a critical obstacle for the broader application of polyamide nanofiltration membranes. To address this concern, a straightforward one-step coating method was proposed by combing the functional antimicrobial peptide ε-polylysine (Ply) with the biomass material phytic acid (PA) to enhance permeance and strengthen anti-biofouling performance of polyamide nanofiltration membranes. Co-deposition of PA/Ply resulted in membranes with increased surface roughness and higher hydrophilicity, exhibiting superior antimicrobial properties against bacteria. Pure water permeance of the modified membrane was significantly increased to 13.67 L m-2h-1bar-1 while maintaining over 95.0 % rejection towards MgCl2. Additionally, the Ply deposition on the membrane surface achieved a remarkable inhibition rate above 99.0 % against S. aureus and Escherichia coli. This study reveals the potential of using biomass materials for nanofiltration membrane fabrication to enhance bioinspired functions.
