    Summary

    Neuroendocrine features in breast cancer are not definitively proven by NSE or granules. However, light microscopy shows some breast carcinomas possess neuroendocrine cell markers.

    Background:

    • Breast carcinomas exhibit diverse histological subtypes.
    • Neuroendocrine differentiation is a recognized feature in some cancers.
    • The presence and significance of neuroendocrine markers in breast cancer require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and significance of neuroendocrine markers in various breast carcinoma subtypes.
    • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), neuropeptides, and serotonin in breast cancer.
    • To determine if neuroendocrine features in breast cancer correlate with distinct clinical behavior.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunohistochemistry was used to detect NSE, neuropeptides, and serotonin in 22 breast carcinomas.
    • Electron microscopy was employed to identify membrane-bound granules.
    • Ultrastructural immunohistochemistry was performed to confirm neuropeptide localization.

    Main Results:

    • All breast carcinomas showed diffuse positivity for NSE.
    • Ten cases exhibited immunoreactivity for 1-2 neuropeptides in scattered cells.
    • Ultrastructural analysis failed to confirm neuropeptide presence; granules were casein-positive.

    Conclusions:

    • NSE immunoreactivity, argyrophilia, and electron microscopic granules are insufficient to classify breast carcinomas as neuroendocrine.
    • Light microscopic immunohistochemistry can reveal neuroendocrine features in certain breast carcinomas.
    • No evidence suggests that breast carcinomas with neuroendocrine features exhibit different clinical behavior.
