This study found a link between pulp stones and the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet). Higher adherence to the MedDiet was associated with an increased presence of pulp stones in participants.
Area of Science:
- Dental Pulp Research
- Nutritional Science
- Dietary Pattern Analysis
Background:
- Pulp stones are calcifications within the dental pulp.
- The Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) is a widely studied dietary pattern.
- The relationship between pulp stones and dietary habits, specifically the MedDiet, is not well-established.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the potential association between the presence of pulp stones and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet).
Main Methods:
- Systemically healthy adults (≥18 years) were divided into groups based on pulp stone presence.
- Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale (MEDAS) was used to assess dietary habits.
- Statistical analysis compared MEDAS scores and adherence levels between groups.
Main Results:
- 212 participants were analyzed (105 with pulp stones, 107 controls).
- The group with pulp stones exhibited significantly higher MEDAS scores and greater adherence to the MedDiet.
- Maxillary first molars were the most common teeth affected by pulp stones.
Conclusions:
- A statistically significant association exists between pulp stones and adherence to the MedDiet.
- Higher adherence to the MedDiet may be linked to an increased prevalence of pulp stones.
