Content Validity of the Theory-Based Nursing Diagnosis Proposal Occupational Stress

Objective:
To evaluate the content validity of the nursing diagnosis 'Occupational Stress' tailored to healthcare professionals.
Methods:
A methodological investigation grounded in the Middle-Range Theory of Occupational Stress among Healthcare Professionals was undertaken. Forty-nine subject-matter experts assessed the pertinence of essential attributes (core conceptual elements), related factors (aetiologies), and defining characteristics (manifestations) associated with the proposed diagnosis. Diagnostic elements were deemed valid when fewer than 15% of experts classified them as inadequate. Descriptive statistical analyses and binomial testing were employed to substantiate the validity of the proposed components.
Results:
The analysis corroborated the content validity of the diagnostic elements, affirming two essential attributes, 29 defining characteristics, 12 related factors, nine at-risk populations, and one associated condition. Recommendations provided by the experts culminated in semantic adjustments, reclassification of components, and enhanced conceptual precision. The diagnostic proposal underwent refinement to ensure accurate representation of the conceptual framework.
Conclusion:
The proposed nursing diagnosis demonstrated substantive content validity, offering a robust theoretical and practical basis for occupational health interventions. Subsequent investigations are requisite to establish its clinical validity and evaluate its applicability across heterogeneous professional contexts and occupational categories.
Implications For Nursing Practice:
The validation of this nursing diagnosis equips nursing professionals with a systematic and evidence-based framework for identifying and addressing occupational stress-related human responses. By delineating specific attributes, related factors, and defining characteristics, the refined proposal fosters strategic interventions to enhance mental health and well-being among healthcare professionals. Moreover, it facilitates the early detection of risk factors, empowering preventive strategies aimed at mitigating occupational stressors.
