    Background:

    • Retirement transition may alter 24-hour movement behaviors (sleep, sedentary behavior, physical activity).
    • The link between these behavioral changes and cognitive function during retirement is not well understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the longitudinal associations between changes in 24-hour movement behaviors and cognitive function during the retirement transition.

    Main Methods:

    • 147 Finnish public sector workers (mean age 63.3) wore accelerometers to measure sleep, sedentary behavior (SED), light physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) before and after retirement.
    • Cognitive function was assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, evaluating six domains.
    • Compositional linear regression and isotemporal substitution analyses examined associations between changes in movement behaviors and cognitive function.

    Main Results:

    • Increased active behaviors (LPA and MVPA) relative to passive behaviors (sleep and SED) were associated with improved reaction time.
    • Increasing sedentary behavior relative to sleep also improved reaction time.
    • Reallocating 30 minutes from sleep to other behaviors correlated with a 0.05 standardized unit improvement in reaction time. No associations were found with other cognitive domains.

    Conclusions:

    • Reallocating time from sleep to other activities during retirement transition is linked to enhanced reaction time.
    • Further research is needed to understand the long-term cognitive effects of these 24-hour movement behavior changes.
