A retrospective quality improvement analysis of simplifying functional assessments: A brief report

Background:
Outpatient university-based clinics serving families of children with challenging behavior often rely on time-intensive functional analyses to inform treatment. The Interview-Informed Synthesized Contingency Analysis (IISCA) has been proposed as a more efficient, yet effective, alternative.
Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the potential impact of implementing a single-session IISCA on service efficiency within a university-based outpatient clinic.
Method:
A retrospective program evaluation was conducted to examine the theoretical time savings associated with using a single-session IISCA approach in place of traditional multi-session assessments.
Results:
Findings suggested that meaningful amounts of time could theoretically be saved by utilizing a single-session IISCA. These potential efficiencies may support more rapid decision-making and service delivery.
Conclusion:
While preliminary results are promising, additional research is needed to evaluate the real-time impact of integrating single-session IISCA into clinical practice, particularly regarding data-informed decision-making and overall service outcomes.
