Abstract:
The emerging field of innovative packaging is set to soon meet the demand for high-quality, environmentally friendly packaging due to its strong innovation potential. This study aims to explore innovations and patents related to chitosan-based intelligent food packaging, focusing on technologies that monitor and signal product changes. To achieve this, a technological mapping was conducted using the European patent database "Espacenet" in December 2024, employing advanced search methods across all text fields. The research emphasizes the importance of these packaging solutions for product protection, quality enhancement, and environmental impact reduction, mainly through biodegradable materials like chitosan. Patent data reveal a marked increase in filings from 2018 onward, reflecting growing ecological concerns. China has the highest number of patents, representing 65.59 % of all filings over the last 17 years. The academic sector was responsible for 76 % of these patents, highlighting its critical role in innovation. The casting method emerged as the most common, recognized for its practicality in packaging production. These innovations enhance consumer safety and aim to optimize resources and reduce waste in the food supply chain. This study concludes that chitosan-based smart packaging has substantial market potential, fostering a competitive and sustainable industry.
