Nutritional effects of postgastrectomy reconstructions.

L J Auguste, E Mavor, P Citrin

    American Journal of Surgery
    |November 1, 1985
    PubMed
    Summary

After total gastrectomy, neither the Hunt-Lawrence pouch nor the Roux-Y esophagojejunostomy showed nutritional benefits. Both reconstruction methods resulted in similar decreases in body weight, food intake, and nutrient absorption in dogs.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Nutritional Science

    Background:

    • Total gastrectomy necessitates esophageal and intestinal reconstruction.
    • The choice of reconstruction technique impacts post-operative nutritional status.
    • Hunt-Lawrence pouch and Roux-Y esophagojejunostomy are common reconstruction methods.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the nutritional outcomes of Hunt-Lawrence pouch versus Roux-Y esophagojejunostomy after total gastrectomy.
    • To evaluate the impact of these reconstructions on body weight, food intake, and nutrient absorption.

    Main Methods:

    • Five mongrel dogs underwent Hunt-Lawrence pouch construction.
    • Five mongrel dogs underwent simple Roux-Y esophagojejunostomy.
    • Nutritional parameters (body weight, food intake, serum albumin, nutrient absorption) were assessed over 3 months post-surgery.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • All measured nutritional parameters decreased postoperatively in both groups.
    • No statistically significant differences in nutritional outcomes were observed between the Hunt-Lawrence pouch and Roux-Y esophagojejunostomy groups.

    Conclusions:

    • The Hunt-Lawrence pouch does not offer a nutritional advantage over the simple Roux-Y esophagojejunostomy following total gastrectomy.
    • Both surgical reconstruction methods result in comparable nutritional deficits.
