Sexual dysfunction (SD) affects nearly half of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients on biologics, driven by psychological factors, not disease severity. Comprehensive care for IBD patients must include sexual health support.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Sexual Medicine
- Psychosomatic Medicine
Background:
- Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) significantly impact patients' quality of life, including sexual function.
- Data on sexual dysfunction (SD) and erectile dysfunction (ED) in IBD patients undergoing biological treatment are limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess sexual function in IBD patients receiving biological therapy.
- To identify predictors of sexual dysfunction in this population.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study involving 135 adult IBD patients (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) initiating biological treatment.
- Validated questionnaires, including the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5), were used to evaluate sexual function.
Main Results:
- 43.7% of IBD patients reported sexual dysfunction, with no significant difference between men and women.
- Sexual dysfunction was correlated with self-reported limitations, particularly in women, but not with disease duration, medication type, or calprotectin levels.
- Psychological factors, not disease severity, were associated with SD and ED in patients on biologics.
Conclusions:
- Sexual dysfunction is prevalent in IBD patients on biological treatment and is linked to psychological factors.
- Disease severity and specific medications did not predict sexual dysfunction.
- Integrated care addressing both physical and psychological aspects of sexual health is crucial for IBD patients.

Diagnostic studies
A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
Crohn's disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...
