    Summary

    Peritoneal serositis, a rare systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complication, can cause ascites. This study presents cases where ascites occurred in SLE without typical contributing factors.

    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with diverse clinical manifestations.
    • Peritoneal serositis, including ascites, is infrequently associated with SLE.
    • Ascites in SLE is traditionally attributed to nephrotic syndrome, cardiac failure, or cirrhosis.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of patients with SLE presenting with ascites were observed.
    • These patients' ascites could not be explained by common complicating factors.
    • The clinical presentation suggests a direct link between SLE and peritoneal serositis.

    Findings:

    • Ascites can occur in SLE patients independent of nephrotic syndrome, congestive heart failure, or hepatic cirrhosis.
    • Peritoneal serositis may be an under-recognized manifestation of SLE.
    • This finding expands the spectrum of SLE-related organ involvement.

    Implications:

    • Clinicians should consider peritoneal serositis in SLE patients with unexplained ascites.
    • Further research is needed to understand the pathogenesis of ascites in SLE.
    • This may lead to earlier diagnosis and improved management of SLE complications.
