Introduction And Importance:
Orthognathic surgery plays a crucial role in the correction of facial deformities, particularly for patients presenting with unique medical challenges such as edentulousness and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) positivity. This case study focuses on a 40-year-old male patient who exemplifies the need for tailored surgical interventions in complex cases.
Case Presentation:
The patient received a treatment plan that included customized dentures and a novel modified Gunning splint designed by our team. This device improved surgical precision by reducing measurement inaccuracies, allowing for precise planning of a Le Fort I osteotomy, resulting in a 6 mm advancement of the maxilla and a 3 mm setback of the mandible.
Discussion:
The complexities associated with treating edentulous patients, especially those with chronic illnesses like HCV, are profound. The integration of this innovative device not only improved surgical accuracy but also enhanced operational efficiency, effectively addressing both functional and aesthetic needs of the patient. The collaborative efforts across dental specialties were instrumental in optimizing surgical outcomes. Moreover, the necessity for ongoing adjustments in the post-operative phase highlighted the dynamic nature of patient care management.
Conclusion:
This case study highlights the potential of combining innovative technologies with personalized treatment in orthognathic surgery. The successful management of an edentulous, HCV-positive patient improved surgical outcomes and informs care practices for similar populations. It also paves the way for future research on innovative surgical devices in complex cases.
