Summary
This study analyzed 424 ocular trauma cases, finding assault as the primary cause, particularly in young males. Female patients with eye injuries require careful assessment for domestic violence, as injuries were often mild but could have significant implications.
Area of Science:
- Forensic Medicine
- Ophthalmology
- Public Health
Background:
- Medico-legal reports are crucial for legal proceedings involving ocular trauma.
- Comprehensive examination and medical history are essential for these cases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze medico-legal reports of ocular trauma cases.
- To determine patient sociodemographic characteristics, trauma types, and injury nature.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 424 forensic medical records of patients with ocular trauma.
- Review of variables including gender, age, cause, nature of incident, diagnosis, injury site, hospitalization, and visual sequelae.
Main Results:
- The majority of cases (73.1%) were male, with the 20-29 age group most affected (27.8%).
- Assault was the leading cause of injury (77.8%), with domestic violence more prevalent in women.
- Periorbital edema/ecchymosis (67.9%) and subconjunctival hemorrhage (16.7%) were common findings. Open-globe injuries led to higher hospitalization and surgical rates.
Conclusions:
- Most forensic ocular trauma cases involved mild injuries to adnexal structures and the anterior segment.
- Physicians should be vigilant for domestic violence indicators in female patients presenting with ocular trauma.
