Objective:
To investigate whether baseline nutritional status influences the effectiveness of an exercise intervention among (pre)frail older adults.
Methods:
This was a subanalysis of an exercise intervention among 149 community-dwelling (pre)frail older adults. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed by baseline nutritional status (normal nutrition group, n = 108; malnutrition risk group, n = 41.
Results:
The normal nutrition group showed both immediate and persistent treatment responses to most outcomes, and the malnutrition risk group only had immediate improvements in frailty scores, depressive symptoms, social function, and mental quality of life (QoL). The malnutrition risk group showed greater immediate improvements in nutrition scores, depressive symptoms, and mental QoL, but less persistent improvements in nutrition scores, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms.
Conclusions:
Exercise interventions should include screening and assessment of nutritional status prior to initiation, which may prompt stratified strategies tailored to nutritional status to ensure persistent effectiveness.

Exercise and Muscle Performance
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...
Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...
