Summary

Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) in men share similar histopathological and immunohistochemical features with those in women. This suggests a potential role for local hormonal signaling in the development of these rare tumors.

Background:

  • Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) are typically characterized by ovarian-type stroma (OTS) and predominantly occur in women.
  • The rare occurrence of MCNs in men raises questions regarding the origin of OTS and the influence of hormones on tumorigenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and histopathological characteristics of pancreatic or hepatic MCNs in men.
  • To compare MCNs in men with those in age-matched women.
  • To explore the impact of hormonal status by examining MCNs in premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative analysis of MCN cases in men and age-matched women.
  • Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining (ER, AR, SF-1) of MCNs.
  • Assessment of stromal cellularity, clinical presentation, tumor location, BMI, and cyst complexity.

  • MCNs in men showed overlapping histopathological and immunohistochemical profiles with MCNs in women.
