Adaptations that Reduce Water Loss

Though evaporation from plant leaves drives transpiration, it also results in loss of water. Because water is critical for photosynthetic reactions and other cellular processes, evolutionary pressures on plants in different environments have driven the acquisition of adaptations that reduce water loss.

13.2K
Plants often form mutualistic relationships with soil-dwelling fungi or bacteria to enhance their roots’ nutrient uptake ability. Root-colonizing fungi (e.g., mycorrhizae) increase a plant’s root surface area, which promotes nutrient absorption. While root-colonizing, nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., rhizobia) convert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3), making nitrogen available to plants for various biological functions. For example, nitrogen is essential for the...

Area of Science:

  • Botany
  • Plant Taxonomy
  • Biodiversity Research

Background:

  • Justicia L. is the most species-rich genus of Acanthaceae in Peru.
  • A comprehensive revision of the genus in Peru is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a preliminary revision of the genus Justicia in Peru.
  • To document taxonomic notes, synonymy, and new species within Justicia.
  • To integrate related genera and clarify taxonomic relationships.

Main Methods:

  • Monographic revision of the genus Justicia in Peru.
  • Description of new species and subspecies.
  • Reclassification of the genus Tessmanniacanthus.
  • Lectotypification of fourteen names.
  • Illustrations (line drawings, photographs, pollen images) and distribution maps.

Main Results:

  • 45 species of Justicia are treated, including 21 new species endemic to Peru.
  • Two new subspecies are described: J. alpina subsp. machupicchuensis and J. discolor subsp. filisepala.
  • The genus Tessmanniacanthus is united with Justicia, with T. chlamydocardioides reclassified as J. chlamydocardioides.
  • Several taxonomic synonyms are established, clarifying species circumscriptions.
  • Detailed taxonomic notes, synonymy, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided for all discussed species.

Conclusions:

  • This revision significantly expands the known diversity of Justicia in Peru.
  • The study establishes a foundation for future comprehensive revisions of the genus.
  • The integration of Tessmanniacanthus and clarification of synonyms contribute to a more stable taxonomy of Peruvian Acanthaceae.
