    Background:

    • Short-bowel syndrome (SBS) significantly impairs nutrient and medication absorption.
    • Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is a common but burdensome treatment for SBS.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate small intestinal transplantation (SIT) as a treatment for short-bowel syndrome (SBS).
    • To determine the absorption site and pharmacokinetics of cyclosporine A (CsA) post-SIT.
    • To explore interactions between CsA and fat emulsions used in TPN.
    • To develop a surgical technique for human small bowel procurement.

    • Assessed oral cyclosporine A (CsA) absorption in dogs with varying degrees of intestinal transplantation (autotransplant, allotransplant).

    • Developed and tested a small bowel harvesting technique in cadavers and organ donors.

    • Fat emulsions may play a role in optimizing CsA absorption in transplant recipients.
