    Background:

    • Endurance-trained athletes exhibit faster VO2 kinetics than untrained individuals.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare VO2 kinetics during exercise onset in trained athletes with similar training habits but differing VO2max.
    • To investigate the relationship between VO2max and VO2 kinetics in highly trained individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten endurance-trained athletes (VO2max 50-70 ml.kg-1.min-1) performed 6-minute cycle ergometer tests at ~50% VO2max.
    • Ventilation and gas exchange were measured using open-circuit techniques.
    • VO2 kinetics were modeled using a single-component exponential function with a time delay.

    Main Results:

    • VO2 half-times ranged from 21.6 to 36.0 seconds across subjects.
    • A significant negative correlation (r = -0.80, p < 0.05) was found between VO2max and VO2 half-time.
    • Higher VO2max was associated with a faster VO2 response at exercise onset.

    Conclusions:

    • In highly trained athletes with similar training, higher VO2max is a key determinant of faster VO2 kinetics.
    • This suggests that VO2max, independent of training habits, influences the rate of oxygen uptake adjustment during exercise.
