Abstract:
The growing incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has implications for anesthesia. Historically general anesthesia (GA) was the preferred anesthetic technique for laparoscopic, upper limb orthopedic surgeries, and open abdominal surgeries. However, in severe COPD the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) is increased. Regional anesthetic (RA) techniques offer several advantages by significantly reducing PPCs. We review anesthetic considerations for COPD patients undergoing RA, discussing benefits and anticipated risks, postoperative pain management, and intraoperative use of noninvasive ventilation. .
