    Plaster cylinder casts for patellar fractures can cause bone weakening and re-fractures. A removable back splint offers a potentially safer alternative for treating these fractures.

    Parturition and the perinatal period: can mode of delivery impact on the future health of the neonate?

    Background:

    • Mildly displaced patellar fractures with intact extensor mechanisms are commonly immobilized in plaster cylinders.
    • This traditional immobilization can lead to complications such as disuse osteoporosis.

    Observation:

    • Disuse osteoporosis of the patella can increase the risk of refracture.
    • Refractures may occur at sites different from the original injury.

    Findings:

    • A removable back splint is proposed as an alternative splinting method.
    • This method is suggested for a splintage period of 1-2 weeks.

    Implications:

    • Removable splints may mitigate the risk of disuse osteoporosis following patellar fractures.
    • This approach could potentially reduce the incidence of secondary refractures.
