    Summary

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Phototherapy

    Background:

    • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
    • Ultraviolet radiation (UVB) is a common treatment for psoriasis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of midwave ultraviolet radiation (UVB) combined with tar or lubricants for plaque-type psoriasis.
    • To assess the effectiveness of maintenance UVB therapy in prolonging remission periods.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-six patients with stable plaque-type psoriasis received 3-5 weekly UVB treatments with tar or lubricants.
    • After clearing, patients underwent maintenance therapy with UVB and lubricants, with decreasing frequency.
    • A shielded control site was used for comparison.

    Main Results:

    • UVB therapy combined with tar or lubricants effectively cleared psoriasis in patients.
    • No significant prolongation of remission was observed with continued maintenance UVB therapy.

    Conclusions:

    • UVB therapy is effective for clearing plaque-type psoriasis.
    • Maintenance UVB therapy does not appear to extend remission duration in this patient cohort.
