Workplace resilience of nursing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic: a mixed methods study

To analyze the workplace resilience of nursing professionals who worked in hospitals in southern Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated factors.

A mixed-methods study with an explanatory sequential design, conducted in four hospitals in Rio Grande do Sul. A cross-sectional study with 845 nursing workers was followed by an exploratory descriptive study involving 17 of these workers. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the quantitative phase, while thematic content analysis was conducted for the qualitative phase. The data were integrated through connection.

The integrative analysis identified three thematic areas: Nursing workers and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic; Resilience in different work environments; and Fear and the mental health impacts of nursing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Low to moderate resilience is associated with the challenges of the unknown, fear of exposure, the risk of COVID-19 contamination, and the impact on mental health.
