The Effect of Aging on Tissues01:19

The Effect of Aging on Tissues

2.5K
Several body functions deteriorate with age. The external signs of aging are easily identifiable. For example, the skin becomes dry, less elastic, and thins out, forming wrinkles. The skin of the face begins to appear looser due to a decrease in the levels of elastic and collagen fibers in the connective tissue. Additionally, melanin production in the hair follicle decreases with age, resulting in gray hair. Moreover, the senses of sight and hearing decline, so glasses and hearing aids may...

Perception of Sound Waves01:01

Perception of Sound Waves

4.7K
The human ear is not equally sensitive to all frequencies in the audible range. It may perceive sound waves with the same pressure but different frequencies as having different loudness. Moreover, the perception of sound waves depends on the health of an individual's ears, which decays with age. The health of one's ears may also be affected by regular exposure to loud noises.
The pitch of a sound depends on the frequency and the pressure amplitude of the source. Two sounds of the same...

Aging01:26

Aging

188
Aging is a complex biological phenomenon influenced by various processes that affect cellular and systemic functions. Several prominent theories attempt to explain its mechanisms, highlighting cellular limitations, oxidative damage, and hormonal changes as central factors in aging.
Cellular Clock Theory
The cellular clock theory posits that the human lifespan is closely tied to the finite capacity of cells to divide, a phenomenon governed by telomeres, which are protective caps at the ends of...

Auditory Perception01:17

Auditory Perception

587
The auditory system is essential for sound perception, utilizing various critical structures. When sound waves enter the outer ear, they travel through the ear canal and cause the eardrum to vibrate. These vibrations are then transmitted to the middle ear, where three tiny bones – the malleus, incus, and stapes – amplify the sound. This amplification is crucial, as it ensures that the sound vibrations are strong enough to be conveyed to the inner ear. These vibrations then reach the...

Hearing01:31

Hearing

53.1K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Cognitive Development During Adulthood01:30

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

289
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Summary

Poor hearing is linked to negative views on aging, particularly regarding physical health and self-perception. Addressing hearing health early is crucial for positive aging experiences.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Audiology
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Hearing loss is a common age-related condition impacting social participation and cognition.
  • Subjective views of aging are influenced by health and functional abilities.
  • The relationship between hearing function and views on aging requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between objectively measured hearing function and generalized/personal views of aging.
  • To explore potential age-related differences in these associations.

Main Methods:

  • 148 participants (aged 40-84) completed an app-based hearing task and validated scales for Generalized Views of Aging and Self-perceptions of Aging.
  • Hearing ability was assessed via pure-tone average in the better ear.
  • Structural equation modeling controlled for age, sex, socioeconomic status, loneliness, and cognition.

Main Results:

  • Poorer hearing was significantly associated with negative age expectations for physical health.
  • Poorer hearing was also linked to more negative self-perceptions of aging.
  • Hearing function did not predict expectations regarding mental health or cognitive function, and no age moderation effects were found.

Conclusions:

  • Objective hearing impairment is associated with less favorable views on aging, specifically concerning physical health and self-perception.
  • These findings underscore the importance of early hearing health interventions to mitigate negative aging perceptions.
  • Further research is needed to fully understand the multifaceted relationship between hearing and aging perspectives.
