    Summary

Markerless video gait analysis detects mobility changes in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Even mild MS shows subtle gait differences in tandem walking, aiding early detection and rehabilitation.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Neurology
    • Rehabilitation Science

    Background:

    • Gait analysis is vital for monitoring Multiple Sclerosis (MS) progression.
    • Markerless video analysis offers a non-invasive, practical alternative to traditional methods.
    • Assessing subtle gait changes can improve early diagnosis and treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of markerless video-based gait analysis in individuals with MS.
    • To identify specific gait parameters that differentiate MS disability levels.
    • To explore the utility of normal and tandem gait analysis for MS assessment.

    Main Methods:

    • A markerless video-based system was used for gait analysis.
    • 25 individuals with MS and 25 controls were analyzed.

  • MS participants were categorized into high (EDSS ≥ 3) and low (EDSS < 3) disability groups.
  • Both normal and tandem gait patterns were assessed.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant spatio-temporal and kinematic differences were found in normal gait for the high EDSS group compared to controls.
    • The low EDSS group showed no significant differences in normal gait.
    • Tandem gait analysis revealed significant heel-to-toe distance differences in the low EDSS group, indicating subtle changes.

    Conclusions:

    • Markerless video gait analysis can detect mobility impairments in MS patients.
    • Tandem gait analysis is sensitive to subtle changes in individuals with lower MS disability.
    • This technology can enhance disease monitoring and guide personalized rehabilitation strategies for MS.
