Physio-biochemical response of vegetable seeds to ageing: A systematic review

Abstract:
Seed viability is an important quality parameter for seed longevity and crop productivity. Therefore, a thorough monitoring of significant viability markers during storage is important in anticipating seed longevity. This review looked at potential physio-biochemical responses of seed to ageing as markers for seed viability in vegetable crops. The quantitative analysis of metadata gathered from the literature revealed a decrease in antioxidant activities, except for dehydroascorbate reductase and peroxidase activities during seed ageing. However, degradation of stored substrates increased with increased seed age. Seed priming in vegetables could be used to restore viability in aged seeds by restoring antioxidant activity. The study presented the most common physio-biochemical changes that are related with the decline of seed viability during vegetable seed ageing. This information can be utilized to improve seed quality and ultimately enhance viability of vegetable seed collections during storage.
