Association between removable denture-wearing and systemic diseases: A scoping review

Objective:
This scoping review aimed to assess and summarize the existing evidence from clinical studies regarding the association between removable denture-wearing and systemic diseases, while elucidating the potential mechanisms underlying this relationship.
Data, Sources, And Study Selection:
An electronic search was conducted on five databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and CINAHL Plus and one register Cochrane, for articles published in the English language. From the initial search, 11,681 articles were identified. After removal of duplicates, there were 5,107 articles. Forty-five full-text studies were assessed for eligibility. After excluding studies that did not meet the eligibility criteria, a total of 30 studies were included in the final scoping review and additional studies were included in the discussion of this review to support evidence. Data were extracted and summarized in tabular form.
Conclusions:
Five categories of systemic diseases have been found to be clinically and meaningfully associated with the removable denture-wearing. The existing clinical studies suggested a potential positive association between removable denture-wearing and respiratory diseases. Other systemic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, autoimmune (rheumatoid arthritis), neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease), have also been investigated. However, the findings remain limited or inconclusive. Thus, additional high-quality clinical studies are necessary to confirm this association.
Clinical Significance:
This review is important as it identifies the potential relationship between denture-wearing and systemic diseases, particularly respiratory diseases. It sheds light on the potential systemic risks or benefits associated with denture-wearing.
