Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

178
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.

Appendicitis-II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

146
Diagnosing and managing appendicitis requires a structured and comprehensive approach that spans from initial assessment to postoperative care. Here is an overview of the process:
Diagnosing Appendicitis
It requires a multifaceted approach, starting with a detailed physical examination to pinpoint the location and nature of the pain and identify any associated symptoms. Laboratory tests play a crucial role. A complete Blood Count (CBC) typically reveals leukocytosis (an increased number of...

Area of Science:

  • Surgical outcomes research
  • Public health initiatives
  • Patient-reported outcome measures

Background:

  • Assessing the impact of free hernia repair programs (FHRP) on patient quality of life (QoL).
  • Hypothesizing QoL improvements for patients undergoing hernia repair through an FHRP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate the QoL outcomes for patients participating in a free hernia repair program.
  • Determine the effectiveness of the FHRP in improving patient well-being and functional status.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective survey study at a single center.
  • Involved underserved patients who underwent inguinal/umbilical hernia repair (2016-2024).
  • Collected data on demographics, post-operative symptoms, return to work, complications, and satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • 59 out of 91 patients completed the survey; majority were Hispanic/Latinx.
  • Low rates of post-operative bulge (5.1%) and tolerable ongoing pain (45.8%).
  • High return to work (86.4%) and full daily activities (100%); zero complications reported; 98.3% satisfaction with FHRP.

Conclusions:

  • The free hernia repair program significantly enhances the quality of life for hernia patients.
  • High patient satisfaction and functional recovery indicate the program's success in improving patient outcomes.
