Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the recovery of emotion recognition abilities in the first year following mild ischemic stroke.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-eight mild ischemic stroke patients were assessed for emotion recognition and cognition at 6-8 weeks and 1 year post-stroke.
  • Questionnaires identified behavioral and mood problems at the 1-year follow-up.
  • Patient performance was compared to 109 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • Mild stroke patients exhibited impaired emotion recognition compared to controls, with no significant recovery over the year.

  • These persistent deficits are associated with cognitive impairment and behavioral issues.
  • Early identification and management of emotion recognition impairments are vital for mitigating long-term behavioral problems post-stroke.
