Objectives:
To explore the mediating effect of physical activity between cognitive function and fall risk, and whether the mediating effect was moderated by social support in a sample of older adults among nursing homes.
Methods:
A convenience sample of 202 older adults was recruited from three nursing homes in China. Fall risk, cognitive function, physical activity and social support were assessed. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, mediating and moderated mediating analysis through PROCESS macro in SPSS were performed.
Results:
The mediating effect of physical activity between cognitive function and fall risk was statistically significant with an indirect effect of -0.254. Additionally, social support moderated the indirect effect of the mediation model (moderating effect = 0.171).
Conclusions:
The findings underscore the clinical significance of physical activity interventions coupled with social support programs as potential moderators in decoupling the progressive association between cognitive deterioration and elevated fall risk among nursing home residents.
