Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

1.9K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Summary

Ankle dimensions vary significantly between males and females in the Chinese population. These anatomical differences, including sex-related and side-specific variations, are crucial for designing better total ankle prostheses.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Medical imaging
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) addresses end-stage ankle arthritis but faces limitations with current prostheses.
  • A need exists for ankle prostheses that better match anatomical characteristics.
  • This study provides an anatomical basis for improved ankle prosthesis design.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate ankle morphometric data in the Chinese population.
  • To establish an anatomical foundation for designing improved total ankle prostheses.
  • To identify sex-related and side-specific anatomical differences in the ankle joint.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized CT scans from 50 Chinese ankle joints.
  • Performed 3D reconstruction and meshing using specialized software (Mimics, 3-matic, Hypermesh).
  • Measured 27 anatomical ankle joint parameters, including Tibial Plafond Width (TiW) and DLA.

Main Results:

  • 27 groups of CT measurement data followed a normal distribution.
  • Significant sex-related differences were found in 18 of 27 measurements, with males exhibiting larger dimensions.
  • Minimal bilateral asymmetry was observed, except for the male Medial Dorsoventral dimension (MDV).

Conclusions:

  • Ankle joint parameters in the Chinese population show sex-related differences and regional variations.
  • Bilateral asymmetries were noted, particularly in males.
  • Prosthesis design must consider gender, ethnicity, and side-specific anatomy for optimal compatibility.
