Peritrichous flagella in mesophilic strains of Aeromonas

Insights

This study investigated peritrichous flagella in Aeromonas bacteria. A significant percentage of Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas caviae strains were found to possess these flagella, confirmed by microscopy.

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Bacteriology

Background:

  • Aeromonas species are common mesophilic bacteria.
  • Flagellar arrangement is a key characteristic in bacterial taxonomy and pathogenicity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of peritrichous flagella in mesophilic Aeromonas strains.
  • To characterize flagellar distribution in Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas caviae.

Main Methods:

  • Tested 186 mesophilic Aeromonas strains (151 A. hydrophila, 35 A. caviae).
  • Utilized Leifson's staining method for flagella visualization.
  • Confirmed findings using electron microscopy.

Main Results:

  • Peritrichous flagella were observed in 18.5% of A. hydrophila strains (28/151).
  • Peritrichous flagella were observed in 17.1% of A. caviae strains (6/35).
  • Total of 34 strains showed peritrichous flagella, verified by electron microscopy.

Conclusions:

  • A notable proportion of mesophilic Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas caviae strains exhibit peritrichous flagellation.
  • This finding contributes to the understanding of Aeromonas morphology and potential virulence factors.
