Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Behavioral Science
- Health Literacy
Background:
- Type 2 diabetes is a growing public health concern.
- Lifestyle change programs (LCPs) are effective in preventing type 2 diabetes.
- The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) is a proven LCP.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore an innovative "partner approach" for National DPP enrollment.
- To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of participants joining the LCP with a supportive partner.
- To determine if this approach enhances engagement and success in the lifestyle change program.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of aggregated participant self-reported weight and physical activity data.
- Evaluation of participant survey and focus group data.
- In-depth interviews with lifestyle coaches to assess program acceptability.
Main Results:
- Participant retention at the end of the year-long program was 79%.
- Participants in the partner approach reported high motivation and success.
- Lifestyle coaches observed increased program retention and lifestyle adaptation compared to non-partner sites.
Conclusions:
- Engaging with a partner may positively influence participation in National DPP LCPs.
- The partner approach could be an effective strategy to recruit individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes.
- This method may appeal to those who prefer social support for lifestyle changes.
