Standard Pixelometry: A Novel and Accessible Approach for Accurate Upper Lip Scar Measurement

Introduction:
Accurate measurement of upper lip scarring is clinically important but challenging. Traditional methods like transparent film tracing are often time-consuming. This study introduces standardized pixelometry-a simple, precise alternative-and evaluates its performance compared with conventional tracing. The goal is to provide a more efficient and reliable scar assessment method.
Methods:
Fifty patients with upper lip scars were enrolled. Scar areas were measured using both methods. For standardized pixelometry, 1×1 cm² reference stickers were placed on the chin, followed by digital photography and software-based area calculation. Transparent film tracing involved manual outlining on films and subsequent software analysis.
Results:
Standardized pixelometry showed excellent accuracy (ICC=0.986 versus film tracing) and inter-rater consistency (ICC=0.998). It reduced measurement time significantly (2.45±0.72 versus 4.17±1.05 min, P<0.001) while maintaining high repeatability.
Conclusions:
Standardized pixelometry outperforms traditional methods, offering superior precision, efficiency, and reliability, making it ideal for clinical and research applications in scar assessment.
